Cardano Outlines Dijkstra Upgrade Roadmap

 

Cardano is preparing for another major step in its development with the upcoming Dijkstra upgrade. The upgrade is designed to improve how the network handles transactions, increase its capacity, and make settlement faster as the Cardano ecosystem continues to grow.

According to the latest roadmap, Dijkstra will be introduced in two main phases. The first phase is targeted for Q4 2026, while the second phase is planned for Q2 2027. These dates are targets rather than guarantees and could change depending on testing and governance. 

What Is the Dijkstra Upgrade?

Dijkstra is the next planned era of Cardano's blockchain development. Instead of introducing every major change at once, Cardano developers have divided the upgrade into separate stages.

This approach allows developers to test each part carefully before it reaches the main network. It also gives the Cardano community time to review the changes and participate in the governance process.

The first phase will focus heavily on Ouroboros Linear Leios, while the second phase will introduce Ouroboros Peras

Phase One: Linear Leios

The first phase is currently targeted for Q4 2026 and will introduce Linear Leios.

The main goal of Leios is to increase Cardano's transaction capacity without simply making blocks larger or reducing the time between blocks. It uses additional Endorser Blocks that can reference more transactions, which are then certified by stake-based committees.

In simple terms, Cardano wants the network to handle more activity while maintaining the security model it already uses.

This could be particularly important if more decentralized applications, DeFi platforms, and users begin using the Cardano network.

More Changes Are Coming in Phase One

Linear Leios isn't the only improvement planned for the first phase.

The Dijkstra Phase 1 roadmap also includes Nested Transactions, new transaction and block serialization structures, protocol parameter changes, and updates related to Plutus V4. These changes are intended to provide developers with a stronger foundation for building applications on Cardano.

The first phase will also prepare the network for Peras, although Peras itself will not be activated at this stage.

Phase Two: Ouroboros Peras

The second phase is targeted for Q2 2027 and will focus on Ouroboros Peras.

While Leios mainly focuses on increasing transaction capacity, Peras is designed to improve transaction settlement and finality. It uses stake-based voting to help the network reach stronger settlement assurances more quickly.

For users, faster settlement could make Cardano applications feel more responsive and could be particularly useful for financial applications where confirmation speed matters.

Why the Upgrade Matters

Cardano has been working toward making its blockchain more capable without giving up its focus on security and decentralization.

The Dijkstra roadmap is important because it addresses two different challenges:

  • Linear Leios: Focuses on increasing transaction throughput.

  • Ouroboros Peras: Focuses on faster settlement and finality.

  • Nested Transactions: Adds more flexibility to transaction design.

  • Plutus improvements: Provide additional capabilities for developers.

  • Node development: Cardano is also working toward greater diversity in its node implementations. 

Together, these changes could give Cardano a stronger technical foundation for future growth.

What It Could Mean for ADA Users

For regular ADA holders, the upgrade doesn't automatically mean that the price of ADA will rise. Blockchain upgrades can improve a network's technology, but market prices are influenced by many other factors.

The more direct impact could be on network performance and usability. If the upgrades work as planned, Cardano could become better equipped to handle increased activity and provide faster settlement.

However, the roadmap is still under development. Testing, community governance, and technical readiness could affect the final timing.

Looking Ahead

The Dijkstra upgrade represents an important stage in Cardano's long-term development. By splitting the rollout into two phases, developers can focus first on increasing transaction capacity and then on improving settlement.

If the current targets remain on track, Linear Leios could arrive in Q4 2026, followed by Peras in Q2 2027. For now, Cardano developers and the wider community will be watching testing and governance decisions closely.
